What should you actually be doing for your business in January?

It’s the season of ‘new year, new me’ and while I don’t buy into that, I do believe there are things that you can (and should) do for you business at the start of a new year to set yourself up for a successful year.

Here are the simple things I’m doing for my business this month and I’d really recommend you should do too.

Reconnect with your vision

It’s so easy across the space of a year to get caught up in the day to day running of your business that you totally lose sight of the bigger picture. Take a moment this month to reconnect with your vision. Think about what you’re actually building and why you’re doing it. This isn’t about setting any major master plans, just a gentle check in with yourself to make sure you’re still on track.

review what you’re offering - is it aligned?

Maybe over the last 12 months you’ve added new offers, tweaked your pricing, changed some deliverables here and there. Look at what you’re offering to your clients and make sure your offers are tidy and aligned. Remove any offers that fill you with dread when someone enquires about them, make sure your prices match the effort you put in and make sure you haven’t added in so many offers that it’s simply too confusing and turning potential clients away.

plan your calendar

I don’t mean book in every meeting that you’re going to have in the next 12 months - that would be ludicrous (and slightly terrifying!) I mean think about your boundaries, if you don’t want to work Friday’s because that’s the day your child isn’t at nursery, physically block out Fridays from your calendar. If you know you need a slower start to your mornings because you’re so overwhelmed getting to your desk and ready for a 9am call every day, block out the 9am slot and change your calls to start at 10. Think about what you really need and how you can nurture yourself this year and plan you calendar accordingly. One thing I’ve done this year is pick 4 weeks and block them out, no work commitments, just family time. It’s really easy when you're your own boss to say ‘I can just take time off whenever I like,’ and then find you never actually got around to it so plan ahead and take care of you.

choose an intentional focus

There’s so much pressure on big goals, growth and changes at this time of the year that it’s easy to get overwhelmed. Take a step back and choose an intentional focus instead. Don’t set yourself crazy, unachievable goals but instead choose an area that you want to focus your energy into. It might be an internal focus like upgrading your systems or maybe something more outward facing like levelling up your online presence. Whatever feels right for you.
